PITTSFIELD, Mass. – Pittsfield High’s Jason Codey and Matthew Burega combined on a three-hitter Monday to lead the Generals to a 5-3 win over Pope Francis.

Codey struck out a pair and allowed one earned run in four innings. Burega had three Ks in three innings of scoreless relief.

“Great team win against a tough Pope team,” Pittsfield coach Drew Pearce said. “Codey and Burega were solid on the mound even with faulty defense at times. Jack Abel was clutch with a two-out, two-RBI hit in the sixth.”

Cam Zerbato singled to center and Cam Hillard drew a walk to start the game-winning rally.

A passed ball put both of them in scoring position, and, with two out, Brenden Socie drew a walk to keep the inning going.

Abel then hit a single up the middle to plate Zerbato and Hillard to make it 5-3.

Abel, Jack Reed and Zerbato each went 2-for-3 in an eight-hit Pittsfield attack.

The Generals (10-1), who qualified for the state tournament with Monday’s win, go to Belchertown on Wednesday.
