WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – Mount Greylock’s Mason Canata and Cam Miller combined to scatter eight hits, and the Mounties rallied for five runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a  9-6 win over Southwick on Thursday.

Canata went four innings and left with the game tied, 4-4, giving the ball to Miller, who earned the win, striking out a pair and walking one.

The Mounties committed just one error while taking advantage of five miscues by the Rams to produce six unearned runs.

“We had some key defensive plays that turned the game,” Mount Greylock coach Rick Paris said. “In the second, with one out, bases loaded, they attempted to bunt and it went up in the air and third baseman Jameson Bayliss came charging in and almost caught it, but it hit off his glove and rolled in foul territory. The runners got confused and ran back to the bases, but Bayliss made a heads up decision and tossed the ball to [Cole] Wetherell at home. Then Wetherell went to eighth-grader Malcolm Leyda, getting his first start at shortstop, who covered third for the double play.

“Then again in the fourth inning with two runners on and one out, right fielder Patrick Holland laid out for a diving catch to save a hit and possibly multiple runs.”

Bayliss and Eli Kristensen each went 1-for-3 with a pair of RBIs in an eight-hit attack for Mount Greylock. Emery Rotter was 1-for-2 and scored a pair of runs.

Bayliss’s two-run single to right in the bottom of the sixth brought home Everett Bayliss and Canata to give Mount Greylock an 8-6 lead.

Mount Greylock (5-5) goes to Lee on Friday afternoon.
